“There are two things that give me an adrenaline rush—one is the gun, and the other is the camera.
I’m Major Sunil Shetty, SM (Retd.). My career has taken me from the Indian Army to the world of entrepreneurship and media. I come from a Fauji family with three generations who have served the country in wars from 1962 to Kargil. Throughout my military service, I was involved in several counter-terrorism operations. Whether stationed in an insurgency zone or at the border, the feeling was always the same. To fight for our nation’s safety. These were the moments we trained for, the moments we lived for.
When I hear about attacks like the one in Pahalgam, where innocent civilians are targeted, it hits me hard. These are not just numbers or headlines—they’re real people. When incidents like these occur, the message from the nation is clear: we will act responsibly but firmly.
That’s why Operation Sindoor was carried out—Prime Minister Modi’s words, “Whoever is responsible, we will give a befitting reply,” were more than just a statement; they were a clear directive. During this operation, we responded decisively to those responsible for harming our people. Our citizens’ safety is our responsibility. And if anyone dares to harm them, we have the resources, the will, and most importantly, the clarity to hold them accountable and respond decisively—nothing more, nothing less.
Civilians, too, play a role in the defense of the country. That’s why civil defense procedures like Operation Abhyaas are important. People need to know it’s not about panic—it’s about preparedness. Every citizen should understand the importance of civil defense procedures. Awareness works both ways.

In 1995, I was awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry. At the time, I was the youngest officer from the Telugu states to receive the honour. It was a proud moment—not just personally, but for my family.
After my time in the Army, I wanted to shift directions, but the mission remained the same: serving my country. I had always been interested in journalism, even before my military career. I pursued a Master’s in Journalism before joining the Army, and after my service, I went on to earn another degree in journalism in London. This shift allowed me to combine my experiences from the battlefield with the skills of storytelling.

Between 2002 and 2005, I worked as a conflict reporter in Afghanistan for several international news agencies, which added a new dimension to my career. When I returned to India, I realised there was no dedicated platform for Indian entrepreneurs. That’s when I launched My Startup TV in 2019, a digital media platform designed to spotlight India’s startup ecosystem.

My Startup TV is a 24/7 digital media platform focused on startups, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Through our platform, we offer interviews, expert insights, and stories that inspire entrepreneurs. With our web channel, digital magazine, podcasts, and an OTT service in development, the goal is clear: to support and elevate young entrepreneurs in India.
Through My Startup Media House, I’ve come across incredible ideas—some benefiting the Indian Armed Forces, such as military-grade technology, agricultural innovations, and homegrown solutions. I’m proud to still contribute to nation-building in this second phase of my life.

Mentoring young founders, working with startups, and investing in new ideas has been an enriching experience. I’ve always believed that national service and entrepreneurship go hand in hand. Both are about serving the people and contributing to the country’s growth.
One key message I always share: In this age of misinformation, verify everything before reacting. Fake news can divide us and harm national unity. It’s crucial to check your sources and make sure you’re getting the right information.
Whether I was in uniform or out of it, my service to the nation continues. My mission remains the same—serving India, just in a different way.”
