“My name is Anjamma. I’ve been working as a sanitation worker with GHMC for almost 22 years.
I work mostly morning and afternoon shifts. On days like New Year’s Eve, the streets look different. Plates, bottles, plastic, and leftover food are thrown around, even when dustbins are nearby. By the time celebrations end, our work begins.
I have five children — three daughters and two sons. We married early. Life moved fast, and responsibilities came early too.
Today, my children understand my work. My daughter supports me and proudly tells people that her mother keeps the city clean. I want a better life for my children, especially my daughters, and I want them to move ahead with confidence.
When I first joined, the city was smaller. Over the years, Hyderabad has grown rapidly. Roads have changed, systems have improved, and many government initiatives have come in. But cleanliness doesn’t depend only on rules or workers. It depends on people.
Educated or not, responsibility is the same. If you can celebrate, you can also dispose of waste properly. Using a dustbin is a small act, but it makes a big difference to the city and to the people who clean it.
I am happy with what I do. I am proud of my work. This job supported my family, educated my children, and gave me self-respect.
My message this new year is simple. Take responsibility for your city. Respect work. Support women.
To my co-workers — stay strong. Our hard work matters. We do this not just as a duty, but for our citizens and for our children.
Happy New Year to everyone.”
