“It’s been a decade since we started YLG – our dream project, something that both of us wanted to do since the beginning of our marriage. It was an arranged marriage, and in the process of getting to know each other, we realized we share the same dream. It was to have our own company. We wanted to not just be personal but professional partners as well. Having worked in different cities and sectors, we were looking for the right opportunity to start something. The beauty and skincare industry attracted us, and my husband, Rahul had experience in that sector. So when we got the first chance, we didn’t let it go. We started the YLG Institut in 2008 and in a year’s time, we opened our first salon in Bengaluru. Our family and close friends were quite surprised by this decision. We don’t come from business backgrounds and that meant, we would have to do everything from scratch by ourselves. But that’s a challenge and risk we were ready to take. The idea was to first focus on education and set-up a brand that was organised. Once we had the institute, we trained people and later opened a salon.That way, we would be consistent in our quality of providing world-class services.

It was a plan that we thought about and did enough research before making the big decision. In all these years of running this business together, the two of us have grown immensely – both individually and as a team. Since the day we got married, back in 1994, we always believed that communication and honesty are the keys to a successful relationship, professionally and personally. We complement each other with our own skills and talents, and that’s how we have been able to work together. Since the beginning, we knew we wanted to set-up a company in an organised way. The challenge was, however, to understand the dynamics of each city, as it expanded. While there was high-intensity competition in big cities, two-tier cities had a lot of demand. There have been mistakes and ups and downs, but as a team, we believe that it’s a never-ending learning process. We have contributed to a tremendous shift in the industry, especially in South India, and that’s a badge we wear with pride.”
