“On the day of the wedding, the time we were given at the Marriage Registrar’s Office was 11:30 am. It was 11:15 am and my now husband still hadn’t showed up! He was stuck in an emergency and got delayed by 20 minutes. Fortunately, we got hitched!
Our story started like a Bollywood movie. We met as colleagues. We both worked in the Cardiology department but he never spoke to me much because I came across as arrogant, or so he claimed. We became good friends when I helped him stay in touch with this girl he liked. We started telling each other everything. He and I were open books but only for each other. After his breakup, we continued to meet and not once did it even strike us that we might be head over heels in love with each other. At office, our relationship was always strictly professional. We never expressed our love towards each other until the day I told him that my parents found me a match.
His face changed and I could see the sadness in his eyes. That was the first time we spoke about ‘us’. We came to a conclusion that if matches were made in heaven, we were it! I convinced my brother with great difficulty but my parents were against it and so were his. They grounded me a month and him and I would discuss the problem at office over breakfast.
They wanted us to change our religions since he was Christian and I, Hindu. But we disagreed and decided to get married at the Registrar’s office. Until I went on a hunger strike, my parents constantly refused. Finally, despite the ups and downs, we got married and it’s been 18 years since. We have been happily married!
Our parents spoke to each other only after 10 years of our marriage.
All I have to say is, once you know, you know. I knew he and I were perfect together, the perfect fit to my puzzle and despite the bumps, we pulled through stronger and drunk on love.”
