“The second time I met her, I made the grandest proposal. I had to, she is all things wonderful!
Our ice-breaker was the fact that our names are eerily similar. Chinmay and Chinmayee. We met online. Who would’ve thought that ‘Orkut’ would be our match-maker?
Since the first time I texted her, until four years later, we had minimal conversations. It was mostly just small talk and greetings, with my attempts to flirt. One day, I had to travel for work to Kolkata and she lived 80kms away from there. I called her and asked if she’d like to meet me. She said yes and I could sense the nervousness in her voice. To be honest, I was pretty jittery myself.
She was guiding me to her place when she saw me for the first time. I walked up to the door, gave my bag in her hand and touched her mother’s feet. I had received a gigantic bonus in their goodbooks for that! We had a great time together. Over the next couple of months, we decided to get married. Our families were on board instantly!
Then came the big day. I had planned a grand proposal and believe me, all things that could possibly go wrong, went wrong that day. Since my flight got delayed from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, I had just 45 minutes to get onto the connecting flight to Kolkata. They closed the gates and I practically had to beg them to let me in. They opened the gates just for me and I managed to reach as planned. There was a restaurant in Kolkata called Hotel Floatel. It was on the river, in the shape of a boat and I pitched my idea to them. I booked the entire deck and told them I’d need two chairs, a table, a bottle of champagne along with red and white ribbon decorations and lights. I told them we’d be there by 6:00pm. I bought flowers on the way to her house and knocked on her door. Her father answered and I simply walked in and handed the flowers to her saying “beautiful roses for the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.” She was overwhelmed. I convinced her parents to let me take her to Kolkata. She had a curfew of 10:00 pm, so we left instantly. Unfortunately, there was truck strike which caused road blockage. So what would have taken us two hours, took us six hours instead. We reached the venue at around 11:30 pm and it was the perfect view looking over the Howrah Bridge. The city lights were blacked out and only the deck was lit up. I made her sit down, opened the bottle of champagne, got down on one knee , said ‘I want to grow old with you, and asked her to marry me. Her eyes welled up with tears. She said ‘Yes!’. It was a beautiful day! A memory for a lifetime.
We got married soon after and it’s been 10 years since. She still keeps me on my toes and our love only grows everyday. She makes me a better, happier man. One grand proposal led have me an entire lifetime of happiness with the woman of my dreams. I sure am lucky!”
