“The day I heard the news about the pandemic, the first thing I did was make my students aware of the seriousness of the issue. Although they were not capable of understanding the nitty-gritty of the pandemic, I taught them the basic steps on how to protect themselves from the novel covid-19.
The school management told them to carry hand sanitizers and masks. We also told them to maintain basic hygiene and demonstrated how to wash hands properly. Since the students in our school are from underprivileged, orthodox backgrounds, making their parents understand the seriousness was the most difficult part. Yet, we tried.
Although the children were given holidays, all the teachers were reporting to the school, where we were all at risk of the getting infected by the virus. Until the government issued a lockdown and went to an extent to demand a shoot at sight order, the parents of the children didn’t seem to comprehend the seriousness of the pandemic and neither did the schools.
Now, with everyone in quarantine, I try to keep in touch with my students and their parents who reach out to me for counselling in these stressful times. I’m glad they understand that we are all in this together and will only get out of it together.
I send them online videos to help them keep in touch with their studies constantly while I use the time to read books on how to train myself to become a better teacher.
The world is crazy out there right now and everybody is panicking. What we need to do is, calm our fears, keep our minds at peace and follow the right guidelines to protect ourselves and the others. The only way out is together. So as long as we have each other’s backs, we will push through. Stronger than before.”
