“I’m a small part of the Telangana state police department. Being around strong and courageous people like our very own DGP sir and Governor madam, made me think about what more we can do for the society, apart from serving people as a police officer. When the lockdown was announced, I realised that one of the best ways to control the spread of COVID-19 was by wearing masks. But how many people out there have access to these masks? Many shops were out of stock, while some increased the prices. I decided to help people by making the masks for them! I didn’t know how to stitch, but I learnt it in 3 days from my mother. We started making them. It was budget friendly for us and extremely useful for others. Initially, I made a few for my neighbours, and then made a few more for those in my colony. It kept on expanding from there on.
I decided to make three masks per person – to ensure that people have extra. They wash and reuse the same one too! I’ve stitched more than 3,000 masks and my goal is to make 10,000 of them. I use my weekly off to work on this with the help of my mother and grandmother, who do the cutting. This is a hard time for all of us. During these volatile times, we should not take our lives for granted. Instead we should be careful and ask others to be careful. Let’s co-operate with those in duty including healthcare workers and police. Let’s fight this together!”
