“When I first saw the dance move called Flare, it looked like cake walk. I started practicing it and what I thought would take me a couple of weeks to achieve, took me one and a half years instead. That was my first big achievement and the joy I felt was overwhelming.
My introduction to BBoying happened in 2011 when my sister was a part of Proximity crew. When they would come home to practice, I would sit in the corner of the room and watch them. They would do head spins and crazy movements where they looked standstill in the air! It was magical to look at. The steps looked groovy and I knew what I wanted to do. I started practicing by myself at home, little by little and my interest only grew with time. In a couple of month’s time, my sister had to quit and move out for professional reasons. By then I had established myself as an amateur dancer to the crew. So when they approached me, asking me to join in a crew meet, I was ecstatic! That’s where my real stint with dance began. There are very few Hip-hop crews in the city, so we had little guidance. We would spend time watching videos on YouTube, do our research and then practice it ourselves.
It was only when we went to other cities for competitions that we saw the real hip-hop dance scene and how much more we could do. Apart from practising with the crew on Sunday’s, I would dance every time I was free, even at home. I participated in solo competitions and also represented Hyderabad on a national level in the Red Bull BC competition where I won the Hyderabad cypher in 2019. I love to dance. More than participating in an event, I love to train. That’s one of the reasons why I started to take dance classes. My sole agenda was to share my knowledge at an early stage which I received late in my journey. There’s nothing else I would’ve liked to do with my free time than dance. Dance makes me more flexible, fit and more than anything, it makes me happy. I’m so energetic and positive when I’m dancing and even though I feel my body is getting weak with age, I know if I’m consistent, I’ll make it till the end dancing.
There’s a long way to go, and I’m glad I embraced the process. I’m proud of what my dance made of me today.”
