“I put on the music and closed my eyes. I was under a spotlight with no one watching. A performance of my own. In that moment, I let go of everything and let the music be my puppet master.
It was in 2018. It was the first time I ever performed freestyle in front of a crowd and took part in a dance battle. It was all thanks to Ryan Martyr that I put myself out there and opened up!
Dancing always came natural to me. I would always try to imitate the steps I’d see on television. From my Lower Kindergarten up until 9th grade, I was not allowed to take part in the dancing activities at school because of my height. They would always kick me out just a day or two before the performance. It was then that I took part in a competition with 3 other friends of mine where all my teachers realized that I’m really good at what I do. If I danced, say, 100 times in school days, I danced 90 times out of those 100 in my tenth grade! Then came a time when I was suddenly down with a skin abnormality which pushed me to such a state where I couldn’t even move. Because, movement meant that my skin would start bleeding. It was horrific but I recovered. It was around this time that I told my mother that I wanted to learn dance properly. Now, I come from a Brahmin family, where my mother is a genius with a triple PhD and I go and tell her I want to pursue dance. You can only imagine how that went! Yet, I was and always will be a rebel. I joined Step Up for a very brief period where it would normally take 3 months for the dancer to be promoted to advanced level, it took me three days instead. It was because Swapnil ExT Kumar was the first dancer to ever recognize my potential! I ended up learning 6-7 dance forms in three months. I was also a part of this group who would go to Twists and Turns studio to practice and I’ve been part of 90-100 flash mobs till date. Our financial conditions at home weren’t really that great during that time, so I decided to start making some bucks of my own. Around this time was when my cousin, Shashank asked me to choreograph songs for his sangeet and I did. They gave 10 grand which was a lot back then and I didnt even know I would be getting paid! And then sangeet after sangeet, I choreographed and danced. After which I joined Red Bull. I lost my dance network for two years during that time! After my first performance in front of a crowd, I have not hesitated ever again to dance when someone said “Beta, Uthke naacho!”.
I can dance anywhere. On the streets, in supermarkets, anywhere. If I’m exhausted to an extent where I can’t move, I will still dance because my feet just won’t shut up! Dance is my superpower. It is my expressions, it is my emotion, it is what makes me, me. I am happy with where I’ve reached and who I am today. There is nothing like ‘I can’t’. If you want it, then just go and get it! So till then, put on some music and let it speak through your body and clap and move like there is no tomorrow, because anybody can dance!”
