“This is a time when everybody is coming together for the sake of humanity. It’s a testing time but our actions and ways of coping up with issues is what will help us survive this. As an entrepreneur, the lockdown has had a big impact on my professional work. But as a social activist and youth politician, I know that I need to step up and do something for people I live with. Having been a student activist since the age of 17, I have a huge network of volunteers and friends with similar ideologies. In the last month, we have all come together to distribute survival kits (rice, cooking oil, dal, tamarind and soaps) to more than 750 families. We have now provided 1,52,000 meals and over 8,250 survival kits to families in our database, apart from donating Rs 3,90,000/- for Satyam Shivam Sundaram Gaushala which has 5,300 cows and supplying medicines to many based on Twitter requests. We have also used Rapid Action Force (CRPF) water cannons for spraying 50,000 litres of disinfectant everyday.
This is all voluntary! We don’t ask for donations – whoever is in our network comes together to help the needy. We don’t look at their background – if they need us, we’re there. We have also started nine helpline numbers for counselling, medical needs and more. Most of the members in my group have been volunteers since college, so we understand public work and we are also aware of the slums where migrant workers live. Amidst all this, we want to make sure we are safe too, or we can’t go out and help others. So we take all the preventive measures suggested by the government including sanitizing, masks and gloves. Let’s all do our bit – first, be safe ourselves and second, help others survive in these times. We will stand up for each other and fight this pandemic together!”
