“Over three years back, Kirti and I met at a club in Gurgaon through mutual friends. The first time just the two of us met, I had cold feet. I’m an introvert and I couldn’t start a conversation. Fortunately, one of us mentioned cinema and we never stopped talking! Both of us are movie buffs – we love gangster and crime thrillers. Almost every rare film I mentioned, she had already watched. I was surprised! We continued to talk and two months later, she had already told her parents about me. They were very supportive. On the other hand, it took me two whole years to bring this up in my house. It was not an easy ride but was it worth it – hell yes! Both Kirti and I met in our late twenties. We had already spent a good amount of time together and we knew were meant to be. It sounds cliché, but on my way back home from our first date, it felt like we had met before and shared some connection.
Maybe it was because I opened up to a person so quickly, which was so unlike me. But that’s how comfortable we are with each other.
Last year, we started talking about marriage. Kirti was keen to get engaged in February. The day we decided to have the ceremony, there were riots in Delhi. Fortunately, our engagement wasn’t affected.
Soon, the wedding was scheduled for April. In a few weeks, the pandemic began and everything was under a lockdown. Nothing was going as planned and it was depressing. We had no idea how or when things would get better. First, we decided a court wedding and cancelled all bookings – hotel, banquet hall and caterer. Then, we realised that wasn’t possible either. Imagine if your wedding plans are affected because of the lockdown – it’s so difficult to be hopeful. That’s when the idea of a zoom wedding came up! I went from pillar to post for a pass from April 13 to 15 in New Delhi. Luckily, we got it. I picked Kirti up and we reached my sister’s house. We hadn’t even shopped! She wore a grand but old lehenga and I put together a kurta pajama.
My sister did the makeup and mehendi. We arranged the camera and laptop, sent zoom invites and soon, we were all set. The priest was available and the ceremony happened in our balcony! It was overwhelming but the joy of the wedding just took over. We had friends and relatives from ten different countries who were on call.
Both our parents were stuck in our hometowns but they were happy to watch the wedding. You won’t believe it – but we also broke into a dance and there was an impromptu sangeet. When it was all finally happening after tons of obstacles, the adrenaline rush was just crazy.
Who would’ve thought we would get married like this? But it happened and it was just as beautiful as a big grand wedding because all that matters is that we were both together and happy.”
