Trigger Warning:
“I was about 8 years old when my basketball coach misbehaved with me in Vishakapatnam. Nobody told me about good touch and bad touch. I joined a coaching centre and in the first three days, the coach asked me to kiss him and made me sit on his lap. I didn’t know how wrong it was but I certainly felt uncomfortable. I quit, and till today, nobody in my family knows this story. As a woman and in fact, as a girl, we go through so much that’s not addressed. People have flashed their genitals to me in public places. I was in a toxic relationship where the man thought he had right to physically abuse me. That was one of the most difficult phases because I was in love. You don’t realise for long, but the first intuition, you should get out of it! Nobody has a right to manhandle you for any reason. That’s when I learnt to love myself first – more than any other individual. Even as a child, I wanted to study law to help other women who face harassment and abuse every other day. But my first job was so toxic that I quit! I interned with NGOs and even today, I strive to do whatever I can to help women – emotionally and legally.
Apart from my skincare and makeup blog, I also have a page called Boss Lady. It’s only to talk to people who need a listener. I keep their stories confidential. I listen to them and give them advice if they need it. Sometimes, all you need is a person to talk to, to share your stories, even if that’s a stranger. People have messaged me saying how just having a conversation has helped them overcome so many things. It makes me content to know that I could do something to help those in distress. Even as a lawyer, I agree and believe that the current laws need to change. The society is changing but our laws are old. They need an upgrade every now and then. Amendments don’t happen for years – and let’s not even talk about implementation. Do people still feel safe in the court of law? This is why I’ve been working individually with those who need assistance. Not everybody has access to paid counselling or therapy. Many don’t even have access to basic healthcare. I look at women like Chinmayi Sripada and Amrutha Pranay and feel inspired to help other women. Every girl around me has a story to tell that’ll inspire you. We’ve got to stand up and be there for each other. That’s exactly what I intend to do – whether it’s with my Instagram pages or my Law degree.”
