“When I was in the UK in 2009, I made a great friend. He was the only Asian in our team, apart from me. Although he was born in the UK, his parents were from Pakistan. So we had a lot to bond over – cricket, food and how he always wanted to travel in India. A couple of years later, I had some financial problems. My husband was pursuing his Masters at Staffordshire University. He had to travel to the Czech Republic for a project, but we needed money for Visa and travel. It would not just affect his degree but it also meant going back to India without a full MBA certification. We had spent a lot on our education and we needed about 5,000 Pounds. I was depressed, so my friend listened to my story and offered to help. I stopped him right there, clarifying that it was a huge amount and we probably wouldn’t be able to give it back right away. He didn’t think twice! He took my account number and transferred immediately the next day. I was startled. We were friends but 5,000 Pounds was not a small amount. It is 5 lakh rupees! Both my husband and I couldn’t believe that when we almost lost hope, my friend helped us with no conditions or terms. Thanks to his kind gesture, my husband travelled to the Czech Republic, completed his work and degree. At a time when we needed the money, he became our saviour. If not for his help, our dreams would’ve ended that day.
There’s so much prejudice against each other’s countries and people. To him, it didn’t matter! I was his friend, so he helped. That day, I learnt that no differences matter – your country, religion, ethnicity or background. We create these boundaries. If you try to look beyond, you will see that we’re all humans with our problems that make us sad and joys that make us smile. He taught me a lot more about life and some football facts, of course! I arranged the money and returned it in a few months. He also invited me to his wedding and we’re still great friends. I cherish this great bond that has taught me to be kind and helpful!”
