“I remember an incident that occurred on Diwali many years ago.. I went onto my balcony to watch the fireworks, and saw a little boy alone, watching the festivities from a corner. I knew the reason he couldn’t celebrate the festival was only because of his inability to afford it. This left a pretty harsh impression on my mind- if a child can’t celebrate such a joyous occasion because of money, what are we even doing as a society?

I believe it was some kind of divine intervention that pushed me towards completing my LLB, after 8 years of working as an engineer. As is almost every middle class family’s dream, I had initially gone to the US, and scored a great job with a handsome salary. However, what happens once you achieve that dream? I wanted more, and I wanted to do something meaningful. I began to read extensively about Mr. Arun Jaitley; in fact, he is largely to thank for who and where I am today. His passing this year left quite a large void in my life, but I have faith that I will do justice to the lessons I have learnt from him.

Every lawyer has one moment in their career that reinstills faith in the path they’ve chosen. Mine was my case for Teenmar Mallanna, exactly a year ago. I was impressed that he’d chosen to cover subjects that the mainstream media avoided, and was echoing the voice of the downtrodden. The moment we won that case, I felt a wave of reassurance. Over the last 3 years, I’ve worked with several public litigation cases, most of which I do not charge for, in sight of the betterment of society.

I truly believe it is my calling to be the voice for those that rightfully deserve it, to provide the basic service of advocacy to those that can’t afford it, and to do my best to work towards never letting poverty get in the way of justice.”
