“I learnt stone carving from my parents. I vividly remember being around 10 years old when I started to learn this. Back then, people would still pay some money for these creations. But in today’s world, nobody wants these. My wife and I used to migrate from one town to another selling these carvings. We’ve settled in Hyderabad for 5 years. Meanwhile, my wife was diagnosed with mouth cancer. I sold the one flat that I had in our hometown, Bhimavaram, and also took loans, but nothing worked. We admitted her in private hospitals also but no amount of treatment helped her. My children work with the municipality and they hardly have money to help me. I know she’s inching towards her end but what can I do? I’ve spent all my money and continue to do, hoping something good happens. But I’ve left it to God now. We’re strong enough to handle whatever comes our way. We’ve been doing that all our lives.”
