“Like most of the people in the handloom weaving community, I grew up watching my grandfather and father weave.
I started weaving in my teenage years and perfected my technique by weaving simple designs . As I became more confident, I started weaving items like shawls, bedsheets, and towels. But what I enjoyed weaving the most were traditional handloom sarees especially the complex pochampally ikkat designs.
Earlier, women in our families would do all the pre-loom work such as getting the yarn ready, while men did the weaving. Today, women sit at the loom too and demonstrate their creativity.
We work hard for little money. Both my wife and I work for 10-12 hours a day.
Our generation is perhaps the last generation in this field. My children don’t want to m continue this legacy so we are working out way out to educate them in good institutions.
I’m looking forward to the day when I’ll proudly walk into their workplaces and see them do everything I couldn’t. That day, all of my hard work will be worth it.”
