“Agriculture has been an ancestral profession. When I was a kid, I didn’t even think of anything else but lands and farming, because I had no other exposure. I remember going to the fields with my father even when I was as young as 7 – not because he asked me to come, but I enjoyed it too. We used no chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Only natural manure and good rains. Today, there are no rains and no irrigation systems either. But I hear the city folks talking about ‘organic produce’. It was all organic before capitalism took over and everything became about making money. Also, back then, farmers were given much more importance than today. But my father used to tell me that looking at the way the world was changing, a day would come when the value for ‘rythu’ will be zero. I was too young to understand what he said, but today, I see it. We had no option though. Agriculture is what we know and this is all we can do. Even today, during the summer, I register with MGNREGA employment scheme to earn some money. The river and water bodies here, in our district, is all directed towards Nagarjuna Sagar and later into the Bay of Bengal. It would be so much better if we’re allowed to use the same water for our crops. But nobody wants to listen to us. Imagine if all the farmers in the country gave up and moved to other kinds of labour work! Where will you get your food from? People should think about this sometimes.”
