“I have always been passionate about Science, Innovation and Technology right from my childhood. I think it stems from curiosity and a love for learning new things. And of course, it’s in my DNA. My father was a physics professor. He played a big role in my love for science. I used to often hang out with my father in his physics lab. He always encouraged me to be inquisitive and motivated me to seek answers constantly.
After a few years of my graduation, I started my entrepreneurial journey in 2000 by establishing a bioinformatics company that provided software solutions and research services in the field of genomics. During my stint, I realized that there was a huge gap between the advances in genomics research and the awareness and adoption of genomics among the general public. Most people in India did not know how genomics could benefit them, especially in the field of preventive, predictive, and personalized health. The other was that in the field of personalized medicine, we were basing our information on the Caucasian population and there would be differences, so we wanted to create a solution that can solve these challenges and create a simple at-home test for the average consumer who could benefit from genomics, which is everyone.
So a decade ago, we started Mapmygenome by introducing Genomepatri- a DNA-based health and wellness solution. Now we offer a range of products and services that help people discover their genetic potential, understand their health risks, and take proactive steps to improve their health outcomes.
The most challenging phase I would say was when we were initially introducing genomics-based personalized healthcare solutions in India. Genomics was a relatively new field, and there were several barriers to adoption and acceptance.
Genomics, research, healthcare, innovation, and technology- these are not just buzzwords but the very pillars that drive MapmyGenome.
There is very limited awareness and understanding of genomics among the general public and healthcare professionals. Overcoming these knowledge gaps required patience, persistence, and effective communication strategies.
We finally have been able to get to the point where people are interested in getting a genomic test done. They are understanding the potential of genomics in changing their health.
I am aiming to create a culture of preventive healthcare in India, where people are more aware of their health status and take action before it is too late. I certainly believe that prevention is the cure, and that genomics can empower people to make informed choices about their health and lifestyle. Our vision is to touch 100 million lives and empower people to know themselves better through their DNA. We are also developing a database that connects gene mutations with traits or conditions that are unique to Indians, to enhance personalized medicine in the country.
I believe that being a leader, innovator, and entrepreneur is not just about having a great idea or a great product. It is also about having a great purpose and a great impact. It is about creating value for society and making a difference in people’s lives. And to be curious, creative, and courageous. Learning from failures and celebrating successes. It is about loving what you do and having fun along the way.”
