“I believe no work is big or small as long as one enjoys the work. Almost 50 years ago, when I was a teenager, I had shifted to Hyderabad from my hometown Suryapet to earn a living. Increasing problems drove me to take up a job to support my family after my high school education.
I did struggle for a couple of years but fortunately, I was able to get a job in the Postal department – Director of Accounts. I worked in the accounts department for 33 years and had just retired 6 months ago from my service.
Back then, everything used to be systematic and with more man power. Now we have an Electronic Money Order and Speed Post System. It certainly took us a while to adjust to the computerization but we were able to adapt to it with training. Along with such changes, the art of letter writing has also lost its way. In the good old days, letters bonded with everyone – family members, friends, acquaintances, regardless of where they were stationed. Unfortunately, these simple pleasures of communication are lost on us today thanks to the modern means of ‘touching base’.
My grandson who’s just 6 years old knows how to operate a smartphone and computer better than me and my son but he still hesitates to pen down his thoughts on a piece of paper. That’s the situation of kids right now.
Anyways, coming back to my current work, I ventured into this iron business just to be occupied in my free time. Even though I had retired, I chose to work just to stay active and contribute my bit for my family’s earnings.”
