“My little one just turned one, and it’s been half a year since I last visited my hometown. I miss him a lot, and video calls help me see him when I miss him most. I come from a small farming family in Jalore, a tiny town in Rajasthan. But there weren’t many opportunities for long term success, so I moved to Hyderabad to find work. It’s been 17 years since I came here, and back then, Hyderabad was still growing.
I remember the streets had less traffic, and only a few people came to my tea stall. People love my tea because I make it the way they do in Rajasthan. I manage to visit my family twice a year, in between running my tea stall. My mom is getting older, but she still works in the fields. My wife is into organic farming.
And this Diwali, I have a special surprise for my family. I’m going back home to be with them with special gifts. Diwali is a big celebration all over India and I can’t wait to see them. I’ve only been using a smartphone for a few years, and it’s made it easier to talk to my family through video calls.
Life has thrown me many curves; I started working young, taking up all sorts of odd jobs. But I found hope and courage when I set up my own tea stall here in Hyderabad. I’ve grown to love this city and its people. My ultimate dream is to build a home here and give my son a good education, so he can have a better life.”
