Home voting has begun in Telangana, with the Election Commission introducing special provisions to ensure the participation of elderly and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) voters in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
“We are honored to participate in the Lok Sabha Election polling. Despite facing difficulties due to old age, we are thankful to Election officials for providing the Home voting facility. Being able to vote from the comfort of our homes truly makes a difference for us,” says a senior citizen who cast her vote.
Running from May 3 to May 6, this initiative offers eligible citizens aged 85 and above, as well as Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) meeting the 40% benchmark disability criteria, the opportunity to cast their votes from home. This alternative to traditional polling booths aims to address accessibility challenges faced by these demographics. Officials have initiated home visits to eligible voters who have opted for this service, paving the way for a more inclusive electoral process.
Out of 24,974 applicants for home voting, a substantial 23,248 have been approved, indicating strong support for the initiative. By providing eligible voters with the option to vote from home, the Election Commission of India seeks to enhance the democratic experience for all citizens.
The home voting initiative represents a significant step towards fostering broader participation and upholding the principles of democracy in India.
