“For the past three years, I have been serving as a lifeguard at Tank Bund, following in the footsteps of my father, who has served people for over two decades as a lifeguard. Living on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake, our life revolves around saving others. People have come to know me as “Tank Bund Shiva’s son,” a title that carries immense pride and responsibility.

Balancing my higher education with my duties at the lake is a challenge, but my father’s legacy fuels my determination. He has taught me not just the skills needed for rescue, but also the compassion and understanding necessary to support those in distress. His experiences and the stories he shared shaped my motive to carry on this vital work.

Hussain Sagar is a place of historical significance in Hyderabad, but it also harbors deep sorrow. Many come here seeking peace, while others, overwhelmed by life’s difficulties, see it as an escape. Each time I see someone preparing to jump, my heart races. Every rescue is a battle against time, a desperate attempt to instill hope in the midst of despair. When I cannot save a life, the pain is indescribable, but it only strengthens my resolve to try harder next time.

Through my work, I have seen the pain of those who feel they have no other choice. This has taught me the critical importance of mental health and the need for people to seek help when they feel overwhelmed. No problem is so great that it cannot be overcome. Temporary issues should not lead to permanent decisions. There is always hope, always a way out, and sometimes all it takes is a hand reaching out in the darkness.

Despite the emotional toll, I am determined to continue. This is not just a job; it is a service to humanity. Each life saved is a victory, each recovery a reminder of why this work matters.

I believe that giving back to society is a responsibility we all share. My father always said that our actions create ripples that affect countless lives. By continuing his work, I hope to inspire others to look beyond their immediate concerns and offer help to those in need.”
