“My journey into fashion began when I was in highschool. I was always fascinated by how people dressed, the colors, the designs, and the prints. I’d collect magazine cutouts and create a small book, sticking pictures of what people wore, how they carried themselves, and what colors or designs suited different body types. This fascination with creativity, colors, and design inspired me to pursue a career in fashion.
Even as a child, I loved art; painting and drawing. People told me I was a good artist, and I believed it too. By the 8th grade, I was determined to become a fashion designer, and that goal has never wavered. Despite what others thought, that I might change my mind, my passion for fashion only grew stronger.
I come from a traditional Marwadi joint family in Hyderabad, where my family has been renowned jewellers, Totaram Muralilal & Family, since 1901. Although my parents hoped I’d follow in the family business or perhaps become a jewelry designer, my heart was set on clothing. Even now, my family calls me the fashion star and often seeks my advice on dressing up.
The path to establishing my label wasn’t easy. Many assumed that coming from a well-off family meant I had it easy, but that wasn’t the case. I didn’t get into my dream college initially, which led to a gap year. During that time, I didn’t sit idle. I took online courses from institutions in Singapore and London, interned with various designers, and handled stalls at exhibitions to gain practical experience.
Eventually, I got into NIFT for a two-year course and simultaneously pursued two other degrees, one from St. Francis College and another from INIFD. Balancing three degrees was exhausting, but I was determined. My days started early and ended late, filled with assignments and classes.
Before this, I had to switch schools from Gitanjali to Chirec International School. This change was challenging as both schools were very different, but I knew I had to adapt because fashion was my goal.
Graduating during the COVID-19 pandemic added another layer of difficulty. I had to complete my courses online, which meant missing out on hands-on learning. Despite the stress and challenges, I managed to finish my degrees and gain experience through internships and handling exhibitions.
Starting my own label at a young age of 21 was a bit tedious. Coming from a family with no background in textiles, I had to research and handle everything myself. From finding materials and tailors to setting up my workspace, I did it all. Although people thought I relied on my family’s wealth, I used my savings from internships and minimal support from my parents to set up my brand. I’m proud to say I’ve repaid most of their investment.
Fashion, for me, is more than just clothing; it’s a form of self-expression that can boost self-esteem and confidence. The clothes we wear reflect our personality, mood, and identity. When we feel good about how we look, it positively impacts our mental health. I aim to create original, wearable, and affordable designs that make women feel fabulous and comfortable. Moreover, sustainable fashion is also important to me. As women, we have the power to lead this movement, making conscious choices that benefit both the planet and the people on it. By supporting sustainable brands and re-styling existing wardrobes, we can all contribute to a better world.
One of my proudest moments was when a renowned celebrity designer wanted me to work as her assistant, praising my portfolio and work ethic. Another memorable milestone was my first exhibition at Pandora, where the positive feedback and financial success reinforced my decision to pursue fashion.
Throughout this journey, my family, especially my mom and dad, have been pillars of support. My sister, brother, grandparents, fiancé, and friends never let me give up, even when COVID made things tough. Seeing clients appreciate my work and wear my designs motivates me to keep pushing forward.
I’ve had some high points, like supplying to various stores across India, including Ohana at Banjara Hills and stores in Jaipur, Mumbai, and Surat. Hearing clients praise my designs for being stylish yet affordable is incredibly rewarding.
A particularly touching moment was when a junior from school approached me in a café, saying she looked up to me and wanted to be a designer like me. Knowing I could inspire someone was very emotional and reaffirmed my passion for fashion.
Looking ahead, I plan to expand my business, open a store, and continue supplying to more stores across India. I want to inspire young girls to follow their dreams, no matter how tough the journey may be. Hard work and perseverance are key. Being financially independent and standing on your own feet is crucial in today’s world.
To all the young girls out there, believe in your dreams, work hard, and you can achieve anything. My journey from a young girl with a passion for fashion to a financially independent and established fashion designer proves that with dedication, anything is possible.”
