“When my husband and I moved to Hyderabad 35 years ago, I knew I had to find work to support our family. I started working as a sweeper with GHMC with a hope to get regular work. The job was tough—low pay, long hours, and working in all kinds of weather, even during heavy rains. But I kept at it, knowing it was providing a steady income for my family.
Over the 22 years I’ve worked in sanitation, I’ve faced many challenges, from public complaints to the difficulties brought by the pandemic. Yet, these experiences have taught me to value hard work. I still remember how my life changed completely when I was married at just 11. My happy carefree childhood days ended abruptly, and I had to leave school after 2nd grade. But rather than focusing on what I lost, I found comfort and purpose in farming, which became my passion.
During the pandemic, people finally recognized the importance of our role in keeping the city clean. It was a reminder that no job is too small if you approach it with dedication and pride.
As I look back, I hope young people understand the value of financial management and appreciating what they have. My story might not be glamorous, but I’m proud of who I am—a simple, hardworking woman who continues to work with dignity and inspire others.”
