“Diwali is a very special time for us. Growing up in a potters’ family, making diyas has been a part of my life since I was a kid. I used to help my grandparents with shaping and decorating them. Those moments hold a lot of memories for me.
The diyas you see behind me are fired at around 900°C. We make them in different shapes and sizes, depending on what people ask for. The process involves working with the clay, letting it dry, and then firing it in the kiln to make sure they’re sturdy and ready for the market.
Things have changed over the years. Many people now prefer electric lights or plastic decorations, and that has affected our business. But for us, this is more than just work – it’s our tradition, something that has been passed down through generations. We’re constantly trying to come up with new designs to keep it going throughout the year.
I just hope people continue to see the beauty in these traditional diyas and support artisans like us. There’s something special about clay diyas that electric lights just can’t replace.”
