“It was a windy day. My parents couldn’t keep up with my pace as I quickly climbed up the hill. I was probably seven-years-old and it was my first time to the Golconda Fort. Some of our family friends from Delhi were in town. I overheard my parents planning a trip to the fort, as I woke up to go to school. I was already in my school uniform, but I begged and pleaded to go along with them. It was a rather long drive for us, though there was much less traffic back then.
On reaching, I was astonished at its beauty and magnificence. I looked through the window of the car, as we drove past the fort towards the parking. Even before everybody got off the car, I started running around in the park. It was a long day but a fun one.
It was also the time I had just started reading the English children’s writer Enid Blyton’s work. As I walked from one pillar to the other in that magnificent fort, I had my own adventure story building up in my mind. I felt like I was a princess who ruled the entire kingdom of Hyderabad. Years later, this memory of mine inspired me to start a podcast titled ‘Beyond Hyderabad’. A few weeks ago, I took my four-year-old daughter to the Qutub Shahi Tombs. She barely understands history or adventure. After the tour, when we reached home, she told me how she felt like she was in a fairy tale. The story she thought of, was so similar to mine! It reminded me of my childhood and innocence in each one of us.
Honestly, it was my first trip to the Golconda that made me begin to love Hyderabad and its rich heritage. I’m happy it’s the same for my daughter as well!”
