“On March 15, 1988 was when I first met her at a friend’s birthday party in Bhadrachalam. I still remember that day where a beautiful liquid sunset was our view while we spoke and spent time together. There was an instant, undeniable spark. We got along really well. Telephones weren’t available and neither was the society supportive of love and relationships before marriage. So, we just continued to be friends, but I knew I was in love with her. We met a couple of times when I visited her. I was studying in Hyderabad, back then. Around the time when I wanted to confess my feelings for her, our mutual friend who introduced us, told me he liked her. She liked him too. So, I kept quiet and stayed out of it. For me, her happiness was important. It was a sacrifice I didn’t mind making. However, we got close again when she broke up. She went into depression, and I kept writing letters to her from Hyderabad, telling her that it’s not the end.
In one of the letters, I told her that I loved her. She replied saying, ‘Why can’t any man just be friends. Why does everything have to be more than that’. I went back immediately to explain myself. ‘We’ll be just friends’, I offered and she obliged. But it didn’t take her long to write to me that her parents are looking for matches, and that she wanted to be with me. Understanding the emergency, I sent a telegram where I wrote: ‘Received your letter Yesterday.’
Nobody but her understood it. She knew that I said yes, by highlighting YS in yesterday. It was special, and we still have that telegram. It was our day and both of us, in two different cities, were the happiest people.
Soon, I went home and met her. We would often go on walks. I told her that my future wasn’t very promising in terms of finances. We then decided that no matter what, we would always be together. What followed wasn’t very easy but it was worth it! Our families were initially against it because of difference in castes and backgrounds, but soon, they were convinced. In May 1992, we tied the knot. It’s been 28 years since. Our love story is special and different to us. What makes us, are our letters, walks and a hope to always be together.”
