“I was going back home from my workplace in Begumpet. I was a reporter and it was past 10 pm when I started. It was like any other day when I didn’t bother to fill petrol. I saw the indicator and told myself, ‘ah, I can make it.’ But unfortunately, I was halfway past the Patny flyover when my bike stopped. I was used to my bike troubling me but the hard part this time was that the nearest petrol bunk was a few kilometres away, only on Sangeet Road. I managed to push the bike till the end of the flyover, but after that, I was stuck. I started to feel anxious.
That’s when two guys on a motorbike came towards me. They offered to get fuel, but I didn’t have an empty bottle. Neither did they. A number of things crossed my mind. It was late and these guys were strangers. Moreover, they were offering to help me quite enthusiastically. It felt suspicious. Pardon me, I’m a woman born and raised in India.
After going back and forth about what can be done, these guys offered to push the bike. All I had to do was manage the handle. I agreed. What other choice did I have? It was almost 11pm. They pushed, but the first bunk was shut. We had to go further till the next bunk. When we reached, I said thank you and was wondering what else to do when they laughed and said, “You’re from the Press. You can make us famous – Just kidding. Be safe.” I was fully covered and they didn’t even see my face. I don’t remember their faces or the bike number. It’s been a few years, but I remember every detail from that night vividly. This incident keeps coming back to me because I’ve been in similar situations several times after that day. The Disha incident from last year hit me quite hard. I keep thinking, I was plain lucky that night. If those men are reading this, thank you for being helpful humans.”
