“I realized my sexuality around the age of 12. My family is Bengali. While they are traditional, I have known them to be very bold. I had wanted to come out to my family since my teenage years, but I felt it would be better to do so once I have a partner. One month after meeting Abhay eight years ago, I asked my mother to come to Hyderabad for a few days, and that’s when I told her. She took 2-3 days to process it and then accepted me wholeheartedly. Our journey to being accepted as gay men has not been too difficult. Once you come out to a critical mass of people and they accept you, your self-confidence rises and each new coming out becomes easier.
We met on a dating app, and our first date lasted an amazing 8 hours! We began the date with breakfast in a café, then went shopping, had lunch, went to the salon, had tea, and then wandered aimlessly through the streets! We moved quickly over the next few dates as we realized we were right for each other. We’ve had our fair share of brawls. But we’ve also learned a lot from each other and grown as a couple. We learned how to put our egos aside during a fight and allow things to cool down. We also highly value each other’s viewpoints. These are some of the factors that have contributed to our happy relationship. We met each other’s parents within a month of starting dating.
Our parents were pleased that we included them from the beginning, and they have been very supportive of our relationship.
Today, sitting here amongst our friends and family with my husband I feel extremely overwhelmed. It all still feels really dreamy. To be able to call Abhay my spouse feels so beautiful. To have your loved ones accept, love and bless you is a blessing and we’re grateful for this, for this day and each day of our lives.”
