“Social media played an important role in my career. I went to the US to learn how I could improve quality of life for Indians with disabilities using sport and exercise. As I progressed with my training, I started connecting with people on social media to understand the disability rights and advocacy ecosystem in India. Social media became the meeting point for me with the entire population of people who worked in this field. It helped me connect to work on program development. I met Sunil Jain, IWTT’s founder through Facebook. I assist Sunil’s work using my graduate training from sport for development and educational leadership. My research identified the critical absence of physical education programs for children with disabilities in India. Sports is a powerful equalizer for any society. With IWTT, we want to promote wheelchair tennis as a sport that can address a multitude of challenges. Accessibility to sport infrastructure for players and understanding towards developing the sport are two main challenges we try to address through our programs.
We’re happy to see many players living their dreams of travelling out of their communities and shattering myths about disability through this tournament.
While some get involved for recreation and the socialization, some have a passion to compete and grow professionally. We want to give them regular training to grow professionally. Program development training and my understanding of disability sport from a global perspective helps me address the constantly evolving needs within this world of sports for Indians with disabilities. I dream of a day when we can will have high performance training centers for people with disabilities to train for the top sport competitions around the world! And I guess with every win, our wheelchair tennis players are helping us get one step closer to that dream!”
