“When my thathayya was on his deathbed, I asked him about his promise of never leaving me. He said, ‘I won’t. I’m always with you’. Even today, days after his death, I still feel he’s with me in every walk of life. That’s what gives me the courage to do anything – even writing and publishing my book, Letters to Love. Over the years, I’ve learnt to understand life and stay close to my roots because of my grandad. I spent a lot of time reading, as a child. When I started to write the book, I knew that it had to be in Telugu – that’s my best way of Express anything. It seems more real and natural to me, considering it’s my mother tongue. I spent over a year writing love stories – everything from a woman’s perspective. I think even readers are tired of hearing the same romantic story from a man. I mean, nobody even talks about what a woman feels when she’s in love. What does a woman feel about her first kiss. What does a woman feel about her breakup. These stories are hardly talked about! My book has a compilation of 40 stories – from a naive six-year-old to a 45-year-old widow – simply because every story deserves to be told. After the launch, I’ve been receiving feedback from young girls about how it’s so relatable. They’ve also told me that it’s written in simple Telugu, which makes them more comfortable and real. Now that’s something lovely to hear! We shouldn’t forget our roots – I learnt that from my grandad. This book is dedicated to him! He’s taught me how to be kind, caring and compassionate. He’s taught me to love and be honest about it. He’s taught me to fight everything that I believe is wrong and do it with confidence. Wherever he is today, I know he’s proud of my work and that’s what matters to me.”
