“Being the son of an army soldier, I spent a major part of my childhood in North India. I loved the hills and the Himalayas. They were always great to look at and inspiring to summit it at some point of my life. But life had planned something different and it brought me and my family to one of the cities in South India. At the age of 20, I went on an impromptu trek with my friends which rekindled my almost forgotten love for the hills and the mountains. Camping and sitting outside the tent, the clear night sky during the treks always brings back fond memories of my favorite childhood hobby – star gazing! Slowly, I started trekking more in places like Harishchandragadh, Dalhousie – Kajjiar – Kalatop, Kedarkantha trek, Chandrakhani pass, Kanchanjunga base camp trek and a few other local treks around Bangalore and Hyderabad. All of these places were so memorable and beautiful with amazing views and experiences. It is these experiences I consciously seek in pursuit of my passion for trekking.
Looking at it now, things have changed drastically from what they were. Due to commercialization, we are going to the Himalayas in the name of trekking and tourism for just polluting it. There are quite a few who go to different hill stations for fun and pollute the environment without following any proper garbage disposal methods. I take deliberate steps to avoid pollution and try and educate my fellow trek members to do the same. I wish for people to become more aware of the destruction they are causing in their wake. The Himalayas are great line of defense for our country and a major tourism attraction. But with the increasing pollution levels, we are slowly losing bits of this great beauty. To everyone trekking along the great mountains, let’s be conscious of the choices we make and leave this place a little more beautiful!”
