“Growing up in the traditional basket makers’ community of East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, we grew up seeing our parents and grandparents weaving bamboo baskets.
From childhood, we learned to shape and weave bamboo into beautiful baskets and items. While many of the younger generations went on to pursue other careers, our family stayed with this tradition, setting up our looms in Hyderabad. Our handmade bamboo creations captivate passersby on their way to Nampally and Charminar.
During festive seasons like Bonalu, we craft baskets, flowers, and hanging pots. We source materials from the Godavari region and transport them with dedication. For five months a year, we set up makeshift huts in the city, pouring our hearts into every weave to earn a living. Our family, including my husband and fellow weavers, work hard, creating up to 40 baskets daily. Yet, despite our dedication, our earnings often falter, leaving us with uncertain days.”
