“Although I was born in Hyderabad, my family moved to the USA and I grew up by the bay in San Francisco. When I shifted back to this city a few years ago, there was some sense of nostalgia. Before we moved, we lived in Adarsh Nagar, just beside Birla Mandir. I have memories of playing on the marble stairs and visiting the temple so often. All those moments came flashing back. Today, however, I have a different connection with Hyderabad. It’s of course not about running around and playing. I have seen the city develop a cosmopolitan culture, welcoming new ideas and traditions. I used to hang out in Lamakaan and Beyond Coffee. With time, people started recognizing me and then, it got awkward. But now, look at the number of coffee shops and pubs blooming in the city! My attention, however, is mostly on art galleries. I enjoy art and often visit these galleries to check out works by new artists. I like that kind of exploring and networking. I recently met a group of South Africans, who have been here for more than 15 years. They are probably more Hyderabadi than I am. It was so cool!”
