“In 2018, I was one among the few women chosen by the Indian government to honor us for our work. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, and many others were there, and I was too. My name is Saajida Khan, and I’m the First ‘Female Music Technician’ in India. It was a big honor.
I’ve loved music since I was a child. I learned different types of music, both Indian and Western, at a university in London. But it wasn’t easy. Even today, there aren’t many women sound engineers in our field. When I started, I was the only woman interested in this in college. Most people were learning to sing or play instruments, not this. My job was to figure out all the parts of a song. I spent the first two years of my job figuring out what instruments were in a song. Back then, we didn’t have the technology we do now. I had to use my musical senses to understand.
When I joined Geethanjali Studios, people would often say, “Oh, you’re a woman.” But when I proved myself in the entrance test, they saw my skills. It was tough, but look how far I’ve come! A few years ago, I went to a big event in Chennai. Many Indian musicians, including legends like K. Vishwanath Garu, were there. The things I’ve learned from working with them are amazing.
In the past, we had audio launches where we released cassettes. Seeing my name as a sound engineer on a cassette was an amazing feeling. Even with today’s online music, that feeling can’t be matched.
My story shows that if you love something and work hard, you can do it. I’m the First Female Music Technician in India, and I hope to inspire others to follow their dreams, even if they seem different.”
