“Every time, during Rakshabandhan, all my cousins would come home and we used to have a grand celebration. Unfortunately, ever since the pandemic hit last year, we started celebrating all the festivals virtually. But I must say, this year’s Rakshanandan is really close to my heart as I have recently ventured into entrepreneurship to the fullest, making handcrafted rakhis and other gift items such as hand-painted clocks and coasters.
Talking about my passion for handicrafts, I feel it is all inherited from my maternal great grandmother and paternal grandmother and it continued. They used to crochet various home decor, design woollen dresses, dolls, etc back then. So, it’s true that I inherited and upgraded myself in making sustainable handcrafted gift items and rakhis as per the present requirement.
Adding on to the above, my school, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Picket, played a role in encouraging my passion. We used to have SUPW – Social Useful Productive Work sessions, wherein we were trained in stitching, candle making, etc besides academics. I mastered candle making then and gifted them to cousins during Diwali. Later on, designed Shri Krishna Jula for Krishnashtami and sold, that’s how I’d been into little entrepreneurs list. I also paint whenever I get free time. I developed an interest in learning crochet a year ago. I have bought the kit then but it rested in the closet for a few months (laughs). Recently, I have got the idea of making eco-friendly handcrafted plantable Rakhis from the clubhouse room (it’s a budding entrepreneurs group, to share ideas etc). One of them inspired me to think differently. It was then, I planned to use my crochet skill as the Rakshabandhan festival is nearing, and I thought of designing plantable handcrafted Rakhi which would help the environment as well. These eco-friendly plantable Rakhis are shipped with a common instruction sheet along with a special handwritten note to my customers. I also feel happy that they are loving my work.
Earlier to Rakhis, I have made hand-painted coasters, hand-painted clocks etc and even shipped them to the customers at Chandigarh, Kulu Manali, etc. I have few more ideas for hampers this year and I can customise those as per the client’s preferences.
My brother and I are quite excited as we celebrate this Rakshabandhan with the handmade plantable crochet rakhi for the first time. I along with my customers await to see our bond grow, bloom and give us happiness ever, along with those plantable rakhis.
I feel extremely glad and happy to take this step and finally, I just want to say – be sustainable so that our future generations have a better world!”
