“Our silent reading community, Secunderabad Reads, was born out of a shared love for books and inspired by Bengaluru’s Cubbon Reads. Even though there’s the Hyderabad Reads, which was initiated last year at KBR Park, it just wasn’t feasible for many of us living on the other side of the city. So, we decided to do something here in Secunderabad at AS Rao Nagar Park, a place where book lovers could gather and indulge in the joy of reading together.
The response from people across Secunderabad has been nothing short of amazing. We’ve welcomed a diverse group of participants, from students to working professionals, all united by their passion for reading. It’s heartwarming to see everyone bring their own materials—be it paperbacks, Kindles, or even study materials. This variety adds a unique flavor to our gatherings.
As an avid reader myself, I always longed for a place where I could meet others who shared my passion for books. I wanted to create a sense of belonging, a space where we could all immerse ourselves in our love for reading and find a community of like-minded individuals.
Reflecting on the past, I remember how parents would encourage reading through bedtime stories or weekend trips to the bookstore. Nowadays, digital consumption has taken over, with videos and digital stories becoming more popular. While this shift has its advantages, there’s an irreplaceable charm in reading a physical book or listening to a story read by a loved one. Whether it’s through a screen or a paperback, the essence of reading remains vital. It’s wonderful to see that the reading culture is still thriving, even if it’s evolving with the times.
When we first launched Secunderabad Reads, the turnout was truly encouraging. We had people traveling from as far as Himayat Nagar, and college students joined us with great enthusiasm. Although some had to leave due to academic and professional commitments, they remain in touch and often seek reading suggestions, which is a testament to the lasting connections we’ve built.
Choosing Saturdays for our gatherings was a thoughtful decision. Initially, we considered various days, but after consulting with our members, Saturday evening emerged as the favorite. It’s a perfect time to unwind after a busy week and prepare for a restful Sunday. I believe that, amidst our hectic lives, we all need a day to reflect and rejuvenate. For many of us, Sunday serves that purpose, making Saturday the ideal day to meet and read together.
My message to all readers is this: While it’s wonderful to lose yourself in the pages of a book and savor the solitude it offers, it’s equally fulfilling to share that experience with others. Meeting fellow readers and discussing our favorite books adds a beautiful dimension to the reading journey. So, come join us at Secunderabad Reads, where we celebrate the joy of reading together.”
