“As citizens of a country, we must ensure that everything we do aligns with the interests and goals of the nation. Our integrity lies in avoiding all things that might prove detrimental to our country. Right from cheating in an examination to adulteration of food, every act that fights our morals can cause harm to us and our Indian brothers and sisters. It is important to have a strong, good character and a spine of your own. I believe schools must award students for good character more than good academics or sport, because character supersedes everything else.
When I didn’t make it through IIT but got into NDA, I realised the importance of finding our own true individual self and not walking with the herd. After passing out from NDA and IMA, I was commissioned into the regiment of artillery, but eventually had to move to the technical EME unit. One day, during my adventure training, while practicing hang gliding, a terrible mishap took place and I fell from a height of almost 70 feet, breaking many bones. After being hospitalised for more than four months, I sprang back in action and worked on developing my stamina and fitness, within a year, to clear my yearly fitness exams, mandatory for army men. Such is the dedication I felt towards my country and its military. Be it facing extreme weather conditions or supporting each other’s families, everything in the Indian Army is done head-on.
Every season, every posting came with a new problem, specifically back when I was serving. When serving at the Jammu-Kashmir border in the artillery, we lived in tents in forests. A common habit we developed then was to check our boots for bugs and insects every morning. 3 years made a strong impact on me and despite living on the 4th floor of a human inhabited apartment building today, I continue to do so. The weather conditions were harsh and electricity, rare. At the border, once, when officials had come visiting a site, the other army got excited and suddenly started firing from across the border and the situation turned from a peaceful one to a dangerous one within seconds.
During my Colonel command, operation Parakram was declared and we bade goodbyes to our families, ready to launch into the enemy’s territory. Meanwhile, my wife was looking after and taking care of the families of all the troop members commissioned in this operation. While posted, as Major General, in the Eastern Command, responsible for all the Seven Sister States, I stood by my morals and fought the system to procure original spare parts for all the army vehicles. After serving for many years in different parts of the country, winning numerous medals and many experiences, I decided to retire and serve as a financial advisor to the Army families and widows. It is important to work towards enabling the families of the fearless fighters, who lost their lives while protecting the rest of the nation, in getting their dues and leading a dignified life. After all, the inhuman conditions of the borders are not known to all, but it is important for all of us to be the best citizens we can.”
