“I’m Vishwanath Karthikey, a 16-year-old mountaineer from Hyderabad. On January 22, 2025, I reached the summit of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America, standing at 22,837 feet. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance of Lt. Col. Romil Barthwal, the CEO of Boots & Crampons, who has supported me in my mountaineering journey. His leadership, along with the expertise of our team leader, Bharath Thammineni, helped me prepare for and tackle the challenges of this climb.
The climb was extremely challenging. The biting cold, strong winds, and the physical toll of the high altitude pushed me to my limits. But step by step, with the encouragement of my team and the preparation I’d done, I made it to the top. Standing there, looking out at the vast Andes, I am grateful for everything that brought me to this moment—my training, my mentors, and, most importantly, my family.
Mountaineering has been a part of my life since I was 11. It started with a trek to Mount Rudugaira in Uttarakhand with my sister, and I was hooked from that moment on. Since then, I’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Mount Denali, and in December 2024, I summited Mount Vinson, Antarctica’s highest peak. At -40°C, with harsh terrain and extreme weather, Mount Vinson was one of my toughest challenges, but it also taught me how much I’m capable of when I stay disciplined and focused.
Balancing mountaineering with school hasn’t been easy, but I’ve learned how to manage my time and stay committed to both. My parents and grandparents have been my biggest supporters, especially my mother, who always reminds me, “Doing what you love leads to a fulfilling and successful life.” Their encouragement has made all the difference, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
To everyone who has been a part of my journey, thank you for believing in me. As I look ahead, my next goal is to climb Mount Everest and continue exploring the mountains. Beyond that, I hope to join the armed forces through the NDA and serve the country. Mountaineering has taught me that with the right mindset and support, no challenge is too big to overcome.”
