“Starting a cafe was my dream – something I wanted to do since childhood. When Nirvana Bistro worked out and was first started, I was on cloud nine! The concept was to make it home for people, where they could come and make new friends – have conversations over coffee. That happened in no time! The space attracted young and dynamic people from various creative fields like theatre, art and music as well. It was a home for me too. I would come there, serve good healthy food and meet new people. It was all about good and positive vibes.
Unfortunately, it shut down and that broke my heart. It took me a while to cope up with that, but I knew I started to do something just as good. Humans of Nirvana was already on and by then, we decided that DragCon was a great idea. But a lot of pub owners didn’t support the idea. It took me a few weeks to find one team who agreed to this. And guess what! It was a huge success. So many Hyderabadis turned up for the event – it was all about encouraging and making each other feel confident and comfortable. Nobody cared about anybody’s background. That’s the space I want to be in. That’s the space I want to provide in the future too. I’m not sure what I’ll do next, but more such events are definitely on the cards.
As Drag is being celebrated all around the world and finding its roots in India, Hyderabad has been one of the cities taking baby steps for drag and we want to take a big leap. We want to spread a message that “Humans are Humans” and present drag as a form of art to a mainstream audience and make is as usual as live music.”
