“My father always told me that I’d either become a professional thief or someone famous and big in my life. I naturally chose the latter path. I was the first Cameraman in Doordarshan. I come from a family of farmers. My mother had 22 deliveries out of which 14 of us survived. My 7 sisters, 6 brothers and me. I was always labelled as a stubborn kid and below-average student. My father would sit us down individually and ask us if we wanted to continue his farming or continue our studies. I wanted to study. But I had to do so under my father’s conditions. So we went to Bangalore for my admission in automobile engineering.
While taking a round of the college, I came across the building which said “Cinematography” and I couldn’t waive my eyes off of it. I told my father that I wanted to do this particular course but his reply was an instant no.
Fortunately for me, I didn’t get a seat in automobile engineering that year.
1963 was when my real journey started. My first two years of cinematography went by. The third-year was difficult because of my family’s financial condition. My food at the hostel was stopped. I was hungry and helpless. Fortunately, next to the hostel, there would be weddings held, every day. So, I crashed most of the weddings and ate the food to survive.
I started my journey as a cinematographer in Bombay. My first job was in a Still Photography studio.
Over time, I grew big in the field as my passion led the way for me. I directed and produced the first Telugu serial called ‘Anaganaga Oka Shoba’ and later ‘Endamavulu’ etc.
I was unstoppable and I still am. If my age hasn’t stopped me from working, then nothing can. I still am the proud owner of a studio. Whoever said retirement is enjoying doing nothing? It’s about doing the things you love, the things that relax you. And this is mine.
Despite the ups and downs, I still flourished. Follow your passion and follow it hard. Let it lead the way and believe me, you are bound to succeed.”
