“I started an NGO named Hyderabad Hair Donations For Cancer Patients two years ago to provide hair wigs for cancer patients free of cost.
I travelled across different states in India to collect the hair from the donors. To get the natural hair wigs done, I have partnered with a wig maker to donate them to cancer patients.
It certainly involves a lot of time and resources to get the hair wigs weaved. It costs anywhere between Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,000 with 7 ponytails of 12 inches long to make one wig. Moreover, we don’t charge anything from donors or recipients until and unless they are willing to support us for future donations.
Over the two years, we have provided close to 300 wigs for cancer patients with the kind support of hair donors.
Looking back on my journey as a hair stylist, I did face a lot of resistance from my family and friends. But I felt why not choose an offbeat career that could be rewarding as well?
After my training at Loreal Academy, I worked with a few prominent hair salons earlier before becoming a freelance hairstylist. As part of my work, whenever I see people coming in for a haircut and makeover, I could see a lot of hair going to waste. I am aware of the fact that there are a few organisations that are working on the hair recycling and wig-making process.
I started this project from the scratch with no support and financial backup, but I am happy with the fact that today we are in a position to provide hair wigs across India free of cost. We certainly need support to get this project going and I want to request people (whoever can) to come forward in donating their hair.
A person who’s diagnosed with cancer goes through a lot of physical and emotional trauma and stress. One could provide support for them by donating 12 inches of their hair. Yes! 12 inches of hair can make a positive difference in the lives of many to get going in their lives.”
