“We’re visiting Hyderabad for the first time, all the way from the North, because we’ve heard so much about the Fish Prasadam and its believed healing powers for respiratory illnesses, particularly asthma. While some may be skeptical about its effectiveness, we don’t want to leave any stone unturned. After hearing some personal stories from friends who’ve had positive results, we thought—why not try it? We have a family history of respiratory issues, and we’re hopeful this might bring the relief we’ve been searching for. The prasadam is administered on June 8th and 9th, so we’ve made our way to the Nampally Grounds, where this age-old remedy is given. We can only hope it works for us too.”

Background Story:
The annual Fish Prasadam, offered by the Bathini family during Mrigasira Karthi, is a century-old tradition that draws tens of thousands of people from across India, all seeking relief from asthma and other respiratory problems. Despite mixed opinions from the medical community, many come with the belief that this herbal remedy, passed down through generations, could be the key to better breathing.

The Fish Prasadam consists of a yellow herbal paste made from a special blend of herbs—the ingredients of which remain undisclosed. A small live murrel fish, about 2 to 2.5 inches in size, is stuffed with this secret paste and gently slipped into the recipient’s mouth, allowing it to travel down the throat.

It is believed that this helps clear congestion and phlegm from the airways, offering relief from respiratory conditions.

Every year during the monsoon season, the Nampally Exhibition Grounds in Hyderabad transform into a place of hope for those struggling with breathing issues. For some, it’s a last resort; for others, it’s a chance to try something that has worked for many before them.

It’s believed that taking this Fish Prasadam consistently over the course of three consecutive years can significantly improve respiratory health.
