“I come from a small town in Sangareddy district. So I wasn’t surprised when my parents were sceptical about the idea of taking up fashion designing as a profession. However, I was clear that fashion was my first love and this is what I want to do. Growing up, I used to keep drawing figures and outfits in school. I would cut pictures of celebrities in newspapers and observe their style. For a while, I didn’t know there was a term for this – fashion designing – and there are courses too. Post my high school, I started to read more about it and convinced my parents to let me study fashion. Back at home, nobody ever did anything in this field. My parents were worried there was no future. They took their time, but they let me pursue my passion.
I shifted to Hyderabad and studied fashion. My aim was to style celebrities, but I knew I had to start with something small and make my way up the ladder gradually. Even before I started off, my designs were showcased at quite a few fashion events including Indian Runway Week. Later, I started to help a friend with her boutique and worked with her as a designer for 3 months.
Fortunately, a film offer came up soon and I quit the other job. Turns out, the film wasn’t going to be made immediately. I was at home for six months. It didn’t feel too right. I was waiting for a chance to prove myself and make my parents proud. During this time, I realised that sometimes, things take time to happen. Not everything goes as planned and that’s okay! I’ll figure it out. And, I did! I happened to meet a director from my hometown who’s also the director of the film Pittagoda. He encouraged me to follow my passion and that certainly boosted my confidence. Later I got an opportunity to work with a new director Gowtham for a feature film. It’s a dream come true for me. After my first project, more opportunities opened up. I also ventured out into personal styling for actors. It all started with a dream that I had as a kid. It took a lot of determination and convincing but it’s all so worth it. And, this is just the beginning.”
