“I’ve been working at GHMC as a sweeper for twenty years. My life took an unexpected turn when I got married at just 11, making me responsible at a very young age. I had to leave school after the 2nd grade, but I’ve never regretted that choice, even though I had different dreams.
I believe in appreciating what we have. When I was young, I was good at milking cows and farming which I actively pursued without any regrets. My goal was clear: to support my family and make sure my children could stand on their own.
I started working at GHMC for a monthly pay of Rs. 1000, choosing to sweep streets and collect trash to have a steady income. Nowadays, inflation eats away our money, unlike in the past when people saved wisely. The younger generation could benefit from learning how to manage their finances.
While doing our jobs, we often encounter disrespect, but I remind myself that our hard work speaks louder than rude words.
Even during the pandemic, we, the GHMC workers, kept fulfilling our duties. People appreciate our efforts better now on the front line. I firmly believe that no job is too small; what truly matters is our dedication and hard work.”
