“After doing a monotonous job for a few years, I quit and decided to travel to Ladakh with my husband. We booked a road trip from Manali on a bullet. Although we were not experienced riders, my husband and I had travelled quite a bit on bullets. There were many others on the trip, but one man named Deepu really changed things for us. We were riding about 16,000 ft above sea level. There was snowfall and hailstorm, and we were riding on a road that was bumpy. Half way through, I started losing my breath. I needed professional help. But since we continued to ride on that road, it made things worse. I fell unconscious. My husband was worried – we had two backpacks to carry and I was really sick. This is when Deepu, another rider in the trip, offered to help. He carried the luggage for us. He helped us with medicines and food too! A couple of days later, my husband started to feel uneasy and breathless. The high altitude was taking a toll on our health. I know how to ride a bike but didn’t want to risk it. Deepu suggested my husband get into the bus that followed all the bikers, and he rode our bike along with me. The bus was always the slowest and came in the end. Since I wanted to keep checking on my husband’s health, Deepu left his group of friends and rode along with us. This was a person we had only met a couple of days ago, being so kind and helpful. I didn’t know how to thank him. Even when we were in the tents, he would walk more than a kilometre to get us food and milk from the mess. He never left our side. My husband was sick for 3 days – he wouldn’t eat anything. He kept sleeping and hardly stayed up. At one point, I was worried that his health was deteriorating. We took him to the hospital, where Deepu stayed with me. Once I was assured by the doctors that everything was fine, I went out of the hospital to tell Deepu the same but I found him crying. When I asked him what happened he said, “My father has met with an accident in Bengaluru. I need to leave, but I wanted to make sure you’re alright.” Those words completely moved me. Even when his dad was in the ICU more than 2,000km away, he chose to help us first before he left. That evening, he left the trip midway, while we went ahead with the journey. But what he did is something I’ll never forget. I was emotionally weak, but he was there to support my husband and me. He didn’t know us, but it didn’t matter to him. I can never repay him, but we have fortunately continued to be good friends! Whenever he needs my help with anything, he asks and I’m there for him. Till today, I keep him in my prayers. You don’t need to be longtime friends to help each other. Just a gesture of kindness and generosity is enough.”
