“I never went to school, but I learned how to write my name from one of my young customers who comes here to play tennis. I don’t know much English, and at the age of 65, I doubt I can learn anything new. But there’s one thing I do know: the joy of seeing a smile on someone’s face when they taste my freshly roasted peanuts or batani.
My journey began in 1989 when I moved to Hyderabad from Khammam. Every day after my daily wage work, I would wander through Abids, soaking in the city’s energy. One day, a friend suggested I start a small business in Hyderabad. I thought, why not? And that’s how I became ‘Palli Thatha.’
I’ve been at this spot for over 25 years. Back then, we were allowed inside the LB Stadium. I would sneak glances at Azhar Bhai (Mohammad Azharuddin) and Sachin Tendulkar, losing myself in their game even if it meant missing out on sales. Now, the big matches have moved to Uppal Stadium, but I still have my loyal customers.
Feeding birds is my hobby, especially sparrows and parrots. They remind me that simple acts of kindness make a difference. Over the last three decades, the city has changed, but my passion for my work hasn’t. Every day, I wake up excited to see familiar faces and share a moment of happiness.
Life has taught me many lessons. Determination and a positive attitude can carry you through any storm. I may not have formal education or speak perfect English, but I’ve built a life and a group of friends from all walks of life. So, next time you pass by, stop for a chat. Enjoy some roasted peanuts. And remember, it’s the small joys that make life beautiful.”
