“When I met Suchandra for the first time after a few days of chatting in 2012, she told me she was engaged to a man. I was taken aback! We were not dating back then, but the news still broke my heart. For me, she seemed to be the one the day we started talking. There was an instant connection – amazing chemistry. She told me that she was heartbroken after a relationship with a girl that didn’t work out and her parents convinced her to get married to a man. In the next few weeks, things changed dramatically. We went on a short vacation and spent a few days together in a stretch. That was the time that strengthened our understanding and bond. One evening, she suddenly took her phone, called her fiance and broke off the wedding immediately. It was absolutely impromptu! Not a surprise that what followed was the most difficult part. It took a lot of effort to convince her parents, who weren’t okay with the relationship. However, in December 2015, Suchandra and I got married in a civil ceremony surrounded by our closest friends, but her parents didn’t attend. The entire wedding arrangements were done in two weeks by our closest friends – the most supportive lot! The wedding was special. A family doesn’t always mean blood relations. To me, it’s about people who are there for you through thick and thin. That’s the kind of person she is to me – I love her courage, straightforwardness and honesty.
Since then, our bond has only grown stronger and better. We also welcomed a four-legged daughter, Romeo. I adopted her from a pet shop in Chennai. We were a little concerned about how we would manage a cat because we’re so busy, but it was one of the best decisions. Both of us visited a pet shop for an aquarium but returned with Romeo! It’s a funny story because we thought she was a boy. When we took her to a vet, we realised she was a girl. By then, we had already named her Romeo. We didn’t change it because she’s a part of a queer family after all! We love spending time with her and Nayantara (youngest family member) – what the four of us share is precious and special.
This is the 9th year of our togetherness and we are so much in love than we were ever before! We complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We are our biggest support system. We are a team!”
