“I came across a news video on YouTube about a 20-year-old woman suffering from a cancerous brain tumour, who wasn’t in the position to get her surgery done. Her husband was a daily wage painter and their income was not sufficient for the surgery. In the video, the couple went on to ask for permission for mercy killing from the state government. I was extremely disturbed. I immediately texted a friend from an NGO (We Can) and fortunately, he responded saying we could get together and help them. We started asking friends, family and on organisations like Milaap. But our source of income wasn’t enough to collect a huge amount like Rs. 3 lakh. That’s when I came across Rapido (bike-taxi) application. I registered with them and decided to spend time after my office hours, taking rides. My plan was to tell every passenger why I was doing this despite having a software job in hope that they would help. I wanted to save this woman’s life no matter what! I would take up rides before and after work, at 6 am and again at 8.30 pm. A few riders heard me, but said they weren’t in the position to help. Others were generous enough to donate and spread the word as well.
Few days, I’d ride even till 1 am to meet the target. It was quite a challenge but my intention was genuine and I believe that’s what helped me collect so much money. One of the customers also posted about this initiative on LinkedIn. Her simple move to post on social media helped us raise a lot more funds. Looking at the posts on these platforms, Rapido themselves decided to help us. We had collected enough for the surgery and fortunately, it was a successful one. The couple is now living happily! Looking back, it all started with one simple reason – to help a couple that was in need. That’s all it took and so many people cooperated, supported and helped us raise funds. It sounds unbelievable, but humanity still exists in the hearts of many people out there. If your motive is genuine and real, everybody will come together to help you.”
