“Life has changed for everybody since the outbreak of COVID-19. While the wealthy are managing with their savings, people like us who live our lives from pay cheque to pay cheque have been affected. We don’t have career planning, so we don’t have any savings either. In my area, a vegetable vendor comes once in a week. About 30 people surround him hoping to get some veggies for their meals. We don’t go to super markets and stock up! That’s when I decided to serve during these volatile times. I have worked as a Delivery Partner earlier, and now I joined an Essential Services Delivery Company to help people who are stuck.
I’m helping so many families get basic needs like diapers for their children or lentils for their daily meals. Of course, it is at the cost of my health – it’s a big risk to visit so many houses and shops. Some customers are kind and understanding – they offer to put a bag from their balcony so I don’t have to enter the building. But there are also other customers who make me come upstairs or don’t even follow no contact delivery. But you can’t say anything to them – once you’ve taken up this task, you’re ready for whatever comes your way.
The police also initially stopped many delivery executives. Fortunately, the company has issued a sticker that we use on our bikes for easy access to all areas. They also gave us a list of guidelines and PPE kits to make sure our families are safe. At home, they’re worried when I go out but they also understand that I’m doing some good work during these uncertain times. When I come home in the evening, I see my kids smile and enjoy the meal I can afford because of this job. I would honestly do anything for that!”
